December 2008

Steve has been sending out new leaflets and posters this term, so hopefully all our partner libraries will now have new updated leaflets. If anyone wants anymore, please get in touch with us.

We'll be organising a visit soon to some other libraries - probably in Oldham, look out here for more details soon!

September 2008

Binspired, a diverse collection of library collections in Bradford have recently launched their website. So if you want to know where in Bradford you can access an anarchist collection, community and campaining materials, European information or just find the local public libraries, why not take a look?

August 2008

New leaflets and posters are currently being quoted for - so there should be some coming out in Autumn!

We're also planning to offer a tour of the University library here in Huddersfield next year to show staff in member libraries our newly renovated floors - if anyone is interested, or has preferences for particular months, let us know.

July 2008

We've been considering what activities to undertake over the next 12 months and one suggestion is tours around a couple of Sheffield libraries. We've had successful trips to Leeds and Manchester in the past, so Sheffield seems a sensible choice. Anyone want to suggest interesting libraries to look around? Most likely candidates at the moment are the Information Commons (Sheffield University) and the main Public Library.

June 2008

Update on the refurbishment at Huddersfield University Library - the library is still open to visitors but stock has moved from floors 5 and 6 to floors 3 and 2 (respectively) and from 21st July to 10th September the main entrance will be closed. An alternative route from the Wakefield Road side of the building will be open during this period.

April 2008

The lastest WELCOME! Matters is now out.

We'll be working on new leaflets and posters for WELCOME! over the coming months, look out for these in Autumn!

This may be the last news on the webpages for a while - I'll be unable to update the site for large periods of time while the University refurbishes two of the floors of the library.

March 2008

Key news this month - Kath Kilburn's replacement has been appointed and he's agreed to jointly co-ordinate the WELCOME! scheme with me alongside his other duties. So, from now on, Stephen Kee is also a WELCOME! co-ordinator. Hello Steve!

I've now sent out most of the revised "purple files" (see below), with just Calderdale Public Libraries to go.

February 2008

I've been updating the "purple files" over the last month or two, which is the information all our partner libraries hold about the WELCOME! scheme. Instead of loose leaf folder which we've used in the past I'm producing small bound A4 booklets that will be replaced once or twice a year, when changes occur. I'll send these out between now and the end of March.

January 2008

A happy new year to one and all!

December 2007

Some of you may have heard that one of the largest libraries in our group has been flooded. The public library in the centre of Huddersfield recently had an encounter with a leaking hose from the temporary ice rink next to it!

There's a tour of the library in Huddersfield Technical college coming up soon - 11th December. This is for staff in member libraries only, but if you'd like to come along please let me know.

November 2007

The new entrance floor at the University of Hudderfield's main library is "officially" being opened soon by Patrick Stewart, but has been up and running for over a month now. This means we now have our PCs back up and running for guest users which were unfortunately unavailable all summer due to the building work.

We'll (hopefully!) be advertising for a replacement for Kath Kilburn shortly and hope to have someone in post in the new year. As part of their role they are likely to be involved with WELCOME!, so we'll post a note here when there is any news.

The latest version of WELCOME! Matters is now available.

October 2007

One of our co-ordinators, Kath Kilburn is leaving soon as she has just started a full time PGCE course. Good luck to her in her return to study, but in the meantime WELCOME! will still be contactable at welcome@hud.ac.uk as normal.

More news about extra health libraries as promised last month- What was the Ward End Mental Health Library has moved to the Central library in Halifax into the "Access for All" room. This move will benefit the public who will now be able to access the publications and other facilities whenever the main library is open.

For further information on the Day Services Collection and its facilities, please contact kathryn.hackney@calderdale.gov.uk or telephone (01422) 349528.

Access information in a way that suits your needs; Enjoy the pleasure of reading your own documents again; Access training opportunities; Ensure that everyone has access to print.

September 2007

Because of the lack of updates over the summer (sorry!), we've yet to say hello and welcome to our newest members. We've another two Public Health Resource Centres join us with great resources to support health education. We've added details of one in Halifax, but there's another to follow shortly (also in Halifax). Look out for more details soon.

WELCOME! materials and "goodies" will be handed out as part of the enrichment fair at Huddersfield Technical College this month. If anyone else wants promotional materials, just get in touch and we'll happily send things out.

August 2007

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last few months, we're back on track again and will carry on updating regularly as normal.

Life at the University library is a bit disrupted at the moment due to extensive building work. Access is still available though, except for guest access to IT - this will be restored in September (probably w.c. 17/09/07) when the building work (hopefully) finishes!

We've recently sent out a pack of information on WELCOME! and findit to local adult learning organisations in the area to increase awareness of our existence.

We've a new version of WELCOME! matters out and we'll be producing our annual report soon as well. Both of these will be available as links at the bottom of the news page.

May 2007

Adult learners week this month (see http://welcome.hud.ac.uk/alw2007).

We're funding a marquee at Dewsbury for a day, plus we'll have a presence in the Kingsgate Centre in Huddersfield for part of the week before handing out leaflets.

We should have a couple of library tours coming up soon for staff in member libraries - check back again soon for more details.

April 2007

We're looking forward to adult learners week in May at the moment (see http://welcome.hud.ac.uk/alw2007 for our activities).

We're also pleased to announce that another scheme similar to ours is starting soon in Bradford - the binspired group is being launched 23rd April, encouraging reference access to a fantastic range of libraries the Bradford area. You'll soon be able to find which libraries you can access in Bradford using the findit! webpages and pick up a leaflet from a wide range of Bradford libraries.

March 2007

A new edition of WELCOME! Matters is out now.

We're busy organising events to fit in with Adult Learners Week, which runs from 19th to 25th May 2007. As we firm things up we'll put information on http://welcome.hud.ac.uk/alw2007 for everyone to access.

Following on from that there will be the launch of Findit! (www.findit.org.uk) across our region - look out for further details soon here.

So lots of organising behind the scenes over the coming months....

February 2007

We've already had quite a few guest users for our IT facilities (including access to the internet, Microsoft Office products and subscription databases) at the University of Huddersfield, including some people that seem to be becoming regulars! Just bring along two forms of recognised ID to the University that include your address to register for this pilot scheme.

January 2007

Happy New Year to everyone.

Looking forward to the new year we intend carrying on promoting access to our libraries in Kirklees and Calderdale with a range of activities. A major one coming up in the next few months will be the launch of Findit! (www.findit.org.uk) across our region - look out for further details soon.

Kirklees public libraries have made some of their electronic databases available online for library members - see their webpages for full details, or our Electronic resources pages for details of electronic resources available from several WELCOME! libraries.

Guest Access to IT at the University of Huddersfield - 13th November 2006

We can now offer a fantastic new service through the library at Huddersfield University. Any adult member of the public can now not only use the university library for reference, but also use PCs to access the internet; use Microsoft Office software; and access a wide range of electronic databases.

They need to bring along two forms of recognised ID that include their address and ask at the libraries student IT support desk to register for this pilot scheme.

We hope this will prove useful to people who not only want to access the internet, but also use our databases to find journal articles; historical newspapers (through Times Digital Archive); electronic books; and other reference material. Please see our page here for a full list of electronic resources available at our member libraries.
